Festival Orchestra, 2018

The main work for the 2018 Festival, Brahms' A German Requiem, will be performed with Brahms' own arrangement for two pianos.

Steve Dunachie (piano)

Steve DunachieSteve is a freelance musician combining performing, composition, private teaching, lecturing and Music Therapy. As a child in Liverpool he studied piano at the Matthay School of Music and violin with Peter Mountain.

After Churchill College Cambridge, he studied piano with Ian Lake at the Royal College and composition with Hugh Wood. Later, he qualified as a Music Therapist and worked for many years in the N.H.S., completing a research degree in Music Psychology. Steve was also a member of the contemporary music ensemble ‘Moiré Music’, touring, broadcasting and recording with them throughout Britain and Europe. He combined this with lecturing in improvisation and keyboard harmony at the Guildhall School of Music and later at Bristol University.

Compositions have included music for T.V., radio and theatre, including (Sir Antony Hopkins’ Uncle Vanya) and Arts Council commissions for ‘Border music’ and new settings of ‘A Shropshire Lad’ also a number of chamber and choral works. Steve is a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

Kevin Gill (piano)

Kevin GillKevin Gill was born and educated in North Yorkshire. He moved to Birmingham to study at the Birmingham School of Music (now Conservatoire) in 1980 and has remained here ever since. After graduating Kevin gained his FRCO and has since pursued a career as a freelance musician and teacher of Piano, Organ and Music Theory. Kevin is Organist and Choirmaster of St. James the Great, Shirley, Solihull. He taught at the Birmingham School of Acting for 25 years, and was Musical Director for the shows Little Me, Into the Woods, Moll Flanders, A New Brain, Assassins, A Man of no Importance and most recently A Little Night Music.

In January 2008 Kevin was appointed Musical Director of Atherstone Choral Society. He has directed them in a variety of works including Haydn Creation, Mozart Requiem and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, Faure Requiem, Britten Rejoice in the Lamb, Rutter Magnificat and most recently Handel’s Messiah.

In addition to this Kevin runs a private teaching practice and is accompanist for the Birmingham Festival Choral Society. He has also worked as a rehearsal pianist with the CBSO Adult and Youth choruses, Birmingham Opera company and the BBC. Kevin has also worked as an Orchestral Pianist with the CBSO at Birmingham Symphony Hall, the NIA, Leeds Town Hall and the Royal Festival Hall. Kevin has also given Organ Recitals in and around Birmingham and also Piano Duet Recitals.

He has also accompanied various Choral Societies in works such as Orff Carmina Burana, Handel Messiah, Britten Rejoice in the Lamb, Bernstein Chichester Psalms, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, and Mozart, Durufle, Brahms and Faure Requiems. He has recently accompanied Birmingham Festival Choral Society in concerts in Coventry Cathedral, Birmingham Town Hall, Tewkesbury Abbey, Malvern Priory, St Paul’s, Hockley, and on tours of Belgium, Holland, Slovenia, Estonia, Slovakia and most recently Ireland.

Away from music his interests include reading, cinema and jogging. Kevin completed his sixth half marathon in October 2017.
